Since 2019, the state of Florida has invested over $4 billion in initiatives to increase teacher salaries, effectively raising starting pay by nearly $10,000. This initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain the state’s educational standards, which Governor DeSantis proudly identifies as the best in the nation.

“Florida’s education system is number one in the nation, and we want to make sure good educators are attracted to Florida with attractive compensation,” stated Governor DeSantis. His administration’s dedication to this cause reflects a deep commitment to not only sustaining but also enhancing the quality of education throughout the state.

A Commitment to Educational Excellence

This substantial investment in teacher pay underscores Florida’s strategic approach to attracting and retaining top educational talent. Florida Department of Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. expressed his gratitude towards Governor DeSantis for his “steadfast commitment and unwavering dedication to Florida’s education system.” He noted that these efforts contribute to Florida’s reputation as a leader in education, earning it the title of “the education state.”

The impact of these investments is evident in the significant increase in the average starting pay for teachers, which now exceeds $48,000, while the average overall teacher salary has risen to more than $54,000. This places Florida at the forefront of teacher compensation in the southeastern United States and showcases the state’s commitment to its educators.

Sustaining Growth and Quality in Education

Prior to Governor DeSantis’s administration, there was no dedicated, recurring funding stream for teacher salary increases. This changed dramatically in 2020 with the establishment of the Teacher Salary Increase Allocation in the state budget, which started at $500 million and has now expanded to more than $1.25 billion for the upcoming fiscal year.
