Fort Lauderdale replaces undersized drainage pipe at Aqua Vista Boulevard brings weeks of traffic disruption
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A wider stormwater pipe is coming to the western end of Aqua Vista Boulevard, but installing it will require weeks of construction on land and activity along the neighboring canal.
Beginning Wednesday, July 29, crews will bring heavy equipment, excavation work and temporary traffic restrictions into the Seven Isles neighborhood as Fort Lauderdale moves forward with a targeted drainage upgrade.
The City of Fort Lauderdale and Southeastern Engineering Contractors, Inc. are replacing an existing 10-inch stormwater pipe with a new 15-inch pipe. The project also includes installing a valve, replacing a catch basin and restoring asphalt and landscaping disturbed during construction.

Work is expected to continue through late August 2026. Crews are scheduled to operate Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., although weather or unforeseen conditions could change the timeline.
Residents near the construction area should expect intermittent noise from machinery and backup alarms. Excavation may also create dust. Part of the underground installation will use directional boring, with entry and exit pits opened to complete the work.
The western end of Aqua Vista Boulevard may close during daily working hours. On-street parking will also be restricted within the active construction zone.

Driveway access is expected to remain available in most cases. However, access may be temporarily interrupted when crews are working directly in front of a property. Construction teams will coordinate with affected residents before those interruptions occur.
Traffic control personnel will be positioned around the work zone to guide vehicles. Drivers are being asked to follow posted signs, slow down and use extra caution near workers and equipment.
The project will also affect the canal. Stormwater pipe materials will be transported by barge along the waterway between Desota and Barcelona drives and Aqua Vista Boulevard, stretching from NE 26th Terrace to the boulevard’s western end.

Temporary canal closures will be necessary at the excavation site while active work is underway. Boats docked next to the project area may face short-term access restrictions when barges are moving or positioned nearby. Crews will contact affected vessel owners in advance.
Once construction is complete, crews will repair pavement and restore landscaping around the project area.
“We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and thank our neighbors for their patience,” the city said in a release.
