Broward County launches $12.7 million project to raise Sheridan Street bridge
Broward County, Florida – A two-foot lift may not sound dramatic, but on Sheridan Street, it could prevent costly crashes and dangerous traffic disruptions for years to come.
Broward County began work Monday, August 3, on a major bridge project designed to create more space above Florida’s Turnpike and make travel safer on two heavily used roadways.
The $12.7 million Sheridan Street Bridge Improvement Project is being managed by the County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division in partnership with contractor Structural Technologies. Construction is expected to continue through spring 2027.
Crews will raise the Sheridan Street bridge by approximately two feet, bringing the vertical clearance above the Turnpike to 16 feet, 6 inches. The increased height will bring the structure up to current standards and reduce the chance of over-height trucks and other large vehicles striking the bridge.
The project is located in District 7, represented by Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis. Funding comes from the Florida Department of Transportation and the Penny for Transportation Surtax, also known as MAP Broward.
Drivers will notice traffic changes throughout the construction period. Electronic message boards have already been installed along Sheridan Street, North 64th Avenue and State Road 7, also known as U.S. 441, to provide updates about construction activity.
Beginning August 3, one lane will remain open in each direction on Sheridan Street. County officials said access will be maintained for nearby homes, businesses, emergency services and the Seminole Tribe during the work.

Some disruption, however, will be unavoidable. Motorists should prepare for periodic delays, allow additional travel time and follow all posted signs and traffic-control instructions.
Certain stages of the project will also require overnight lane closures on Sheridan Street and Florida’s Turnpike. Those closures will not occur without warning, according to the County, which plans to provide advance notice before each scheduled traffic impact.
Once completed, the improvements are expected to provide safer clearance for Turnpike traffic while reducing the risk of bridge strikes that could affect drivers above and below the structure.
