Broward County joins community-led campaign to raise awareness of climate crisis

Share

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Resilient Environment Department and Cultural Division of Broward County are teaming up with the Xavier Cortada Foundation to launch a climate action campaign known as Underwater: Broward. The campaign aims to spark a community-wide dialogue on climate change by merging the compelling force of art with vital climate action.

Engaging the Community Through Art

Underwater: Broward stands out as a community-led climate action campaign. It leverages art to engage people in a journey of discovery, conversation, and action. The initiative seeks to motivate local actions and community involvement to address climate challenges. Artist-led events offer participants an opportunity to understand local climate issues, learn about their homes’ elevation, and become climate ambassadors within their communities.

This unique approach will bring several visually engaging artworks to various locations across Broward County. Notable installations include a striking wall mural near the Broward County Governmental Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a Broward County Transit bus wrapped in a sea level rise theme, and an aluminum sculpture showcasing a site elevation at a Broward County Facility. Moreover, the campaign extends its educational reach to the younger generation, with murals set to be installed at ten Broward County Public Schools, accompanied by interactive workshops led by Cortada.

A Series of Inspiring Workshops

Cortada is not only contributing his artistic talents but also his knowledge and passion for climate advocacy through workshops and speaking engagements. Key events include the Broward Water Matter’s Day event on March 9 at Tree Tops Park in Davie and the Central County Community Climate Conversation on April 27 at the Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale. These sessions aim to deepen the understanding of climate issues and inspire actions tailored to Broward County’s unique environmental context.

The Underwater campaign is a testament to Broward County’s commitment to fostering a resilient and inclusive community, bridging the gap between residents’ daily experiences and broader environmental efforts. The initiative is supported by a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward.
