Broward County welcomes new Animal Services Director with decades of expertise

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – William Douglas Brightwell has been appointed as the Director of Animal Services for Broward County. With over two decades of expertise in animal care and welfare, Brightwell is set to begin his role on May 13.

From Military Service to Animal Welfare

Brightwell’s professional career is both diverse and inspiring. His journey began with honorable service in two branches of the United States Armed Forces, the Air Force and the Navy. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration in Human Resources Management.

His transition into animal welfare was marked by a combination of passion and expertise, leading him to become a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. Brightwell’s leadership and dedication to animal welfare were further recognized through his active role in the Florida Animal Control Association, where he served on the Board of Directors from 2015 through 2022.

Leadership and Vision for Broward County

In his current role as Director of Animal Services for Pinellas County, Brightwell has showcased his ability to lead with compassion, expertise, and a clear vision for the future. His appointment as the Director of the Animal Care Division in Broward County is a testament to his exceptional qualifications and his commitment to improving the lives of animals and the communities that care for them.

County Administrator Monica Cepero expressed confidence in Brightwell’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in community partnerships, municipal relationships, team leadership, and policy direction. “Mr. Brightwell is compassionate, experienced and will be dedicated to animal welfare in Broward County,” Cepero stated, emphasizing the positive impact Brightwell is expected to bring to the division.

Brightwell himself is eager to embrace this new opportunity, stating, “It will be an honor to serve the residents of Broward County and the animals who need and deserve our help.” His enthusiasm for engaging with the animal care community and enhancing the services offered by the Animal Care Division reflects his dedication to making a significant difference in the lives of animals and the people who support them.
