HBMD starts major bridge rehabilitation in Coral Springs to address structural issues

Coral Springs, Florida – The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) of Broward County has announced a significant bridge rehabilitation project on Riverside Drive, spanning from Atlantic Boulevard to Coral Ridge Drive/Nob Hill Road in Coral Springs. This critical infrastructure effort, set to commence on May 13 and expected to conclude in November 2024, aims to enhance the structural integrity of the bridge following concerns highlighted in a recent inspection by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Project Details and Impact on Local Traffic

Funded by the State Gas Tax, the project targets several structural issues requiring urgent attention to ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge. While the rehabilitation is extensive, the impact on daily traffic and local access is expected to be minimal. HBMD has planned the construction phases carefully to avoid significant disruptions: “Much of the construction will not cause any lane closures except for a short time to perform deck waterproofing and asphalt resurfacing.” Additionally, access to driveways and sidewalks will be maintained throughout the project duration, ensuring minimal inconvenience to residents and businesses.

HBMD has adopted an innovative design and construction method that allows most of the repair work to be conducted from the underside of the bridge. This technique involves the use of floating platforms in the waterway, which is a departure from traditional methods that typically require more extensive road closures and disruptions. This new method not only reduces the impact on traffic but also lessens the environmental footprint of the construction process.
