Gov. DeSantis orders flags at half-staff across Florida in honor of former governor

Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a directive for flags to be flown at half-staff across Florida in honor of former Governor Bob Graham. Surrounded by his family and Adele, his wife of sixty-five years, the former governor died on April 16, 2024, at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and significant contributions to the state’s progress.

Honoring a Legacy

Born and educated in Florida, Governor Graham’s journey into public service began with his education at the University of Florida, followed by Harvard Law School. His political career kicked off in 1966, when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. After serving two terms in the House and then two in the Florida Senate, he ascended to the governorship in 1978. Governor Graham’s tenure as Governor of Florida was marked by his dedication to economic advancement and enhancing public education, with a strong focus on instilling civics knowledge among the youth of Florida.

After two successful terms as governor, he continued his service to the nation in the United States Senate, where he served for 18 years until his retirement from public life in 2005. His post-political years were not devoid of influence; he regularly contributed writings on state and national issues and established the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida, aimed at nurturing future political leaders.

Governor Graham’s efforts to conserve Florida’s natural resources are among his most notable achievements. In honor of his significant service and as a mark of respect, Governor Ron DeSantis has directed that flags be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings throughout Florida from sunrise to sunset, starting Wednesday, April 18, 2024, until the date of his interment.
