New Virtual Prime Site gives Broward first responders a more resilient emergency radio network
Broward County, Florida – For first responders, a radio system is rarely noticed when everything works. But in an emergency, a few seconds of disruption can matter. Broward County is now putting newer technology behind those critical conversations.
Earlier this week, the County announced that its Virtual Prime Site had officially gone live, marking a major upgrade to Broward’s Public Safety Radio System. The new platform is designed to strengthen the reliability, redundancy and long-term resiliency of radio communications used by first responders across the county.
The change moves Broward away from aging physical hardware and into a fully virtualized, centrally managed environment. Instead of relying on separate hardware components for major system functions, the Virtual Prime Site brings those functions together on one virtual platform.

County officials said the modernization is expected to improve interoperability and allow faster system failover when problems occur. The virtual setup also gives Broward more flexibility to expand or introduce future enhancements without relying on the same type of physical infrastructure.
“Today’s go live of the Virtual Prime Site marks a critical advancement in our radio system’s reliability and readiness,” Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen said.
“This investment ensures that our first responders have the robust, resilient communications infrastructure necessary to protect the residents and visitors of Broward County.”
The upgrade supports communications used by law enforcement, fire rescue, emergency medical services and other public safety partners. It is part of Broward County’s broader effort to modernize the technology behind emergency response operations.
“This project combines the main hardware functions into one virtual platform, making the system more reliable and reducing long-term costs-all essential for a modern, mission-critical radio system,” said Tracy L. Jackson, Director of the Office of Regional Communications & Technology. “This is a major step forward for public safety operations throughout Broward County.”
The Broward County Office of Regional Communications and Technology provides and maintains Regional 911 and other essential public safety communications systems used to connect emergency responders throughout the county.
