Wilton Manors, Florida – The long-awaited aquatics center in Wilton Manors, initially approved nearly six years ago, is now anticipated to be completed by the summer of 2024. This development marks a significant milestone for the community, bringing new life to a site with a rich history.
Revitalizing a Historical Site
The center, set to be located at the site of a former Goodwill store at 550 E. Oakland Park Blvd., promises to be a multifaceted facility. The plans include transforming what was originally a roller rink into a pool area. Additional amenities to complement the pool are locker rooms, meeting rooms, deck space, a snack bar, and a pro-shop. These features aim to create a comprehensive recreational space for residents and visitors alike.
The city confirmed that the journey towards this development started with a partial demolition permit issued in July 2019, followed by a renovation permit in December of the same year. However, the project encountered delays and remained dormant for several years due to an alleged engineering problem. Fortunately, the project is now moving forward again.
The building at 550 E. Oakland Park Blvd. has been vacant since 2011, when Goodwill moved to its new location at Dixie Highway and Oakland Park Boulevard. Before housing Goodwill, the building served as a skating rink.
The community in Wilton Manors is eagerly awaiting the completion of the aquatics center, which represents not only the revival of a long-vacant space but also the creation of a new venue for recreation and community engagement.
