Florida doubles down on police recruitment with another massive round of $5,000 bonuses
Florida – Florida’s effort to recruit law enforcement officers crossed another major spending milestone this week, with more than $10 million awarded to 1,506 newly hired officers across the state. The latest round includes 38 recruits in Pasco County, where Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the payments on Sept. 15.
The new awards add to a program that has distributed bonuses to nearly 12,500 officers since 2022. According to the Governor’s Office, the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program has now provided more than $83 million in payments statewide, making the latest group part of a recruitment push that has continued for four years.

Each eligible newly recruited and employed officer receives a one-time $5,000 bonus after taxes. The program was created as part of a broader state effort to attract and retain law enforcement personnel in Florida.
“In the four years since, we have awarded nearly 12,500 bonuses totaling more than $83 million to our law enforcement officers,” DeSantis said.
He also pointed to state spending on officer pay, benefits, training and protections as part of the administration’s recruitment strategy.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly said the bonuses are one piece of a wider package intended to support officers and their families, including higher pay, expanded education opportunities and wellness benefits.
The program is continuing in the state’s Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget. The budget includes $20 million for the Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program and $19.8 million in pay increases for sworn state law enforcement officers. It also provides $2.5 million in pay increases for state firefighters.

Those investments follow changes made in the Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget, when the minimum base pay for state law enforcement officers rose to $60,000. Entry-level officers received 10% raises, while veteran officers received 15% increases, according to the Governor’s Office.
Florida has also expanded wellness resources and education programs tied to law enforcement careers. The state launched the Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program to help cover training costs for new recruits and introduced law enforcement education programs in high schools. Other measures cited by the administration include enhanced penalties for crimes against officers.
Beyond the recruitment payment, the state says law enforcement careers may include health and retirement benefits, student loan forgiveness programs, home loan programs, financial stability and opportunities for advancement.
