West Commercial Boulevard traffic system is getting a high-speed fiber overhaul between Pine Island and University, construction begins October 5

Broward County, Florida – A major traffic technology upgrade is coming to a busy stretch of West Commercial Boulevard, with construction set to begin Monday, October 5. The work will connect traffic signals with Broward County’s Traffic Management Center through a new high-speed fiber optic network.

The project covers Commercial Boulevard between Pine Island Road and University Drive, extending through parts of Tamarac and Lauderhill. While most drivers may never see the communications equipment once it is installed, the new network is designed to strengthen the connection between traffic signals and the county system that manages them.

Broward County’s Highway Construction and Engineering Division is overseeing the project, with Horsepower Electric, Inc. serving as the contractor. Construction is expected to continue through May 2027, although the schedule could change because of weather or other unforeseen conditions.

The improvements are being funded through the Penny for Transportation surtax. Additional information about transportation projects supported by the program is available through MAP Broward.

Drivers traveling through the construction area should expect temporary single-lane closures during off-peak hours while crews complete the work. The county said sidewalk access should face only minimal disruption. Where pedestrian routes are affected, clearly marked detours will be provided.

The project crosses two Broward County commission districts. District 3 is represented by Commissioner Michael Udine, while District 9 is represented by Commissioner Hazelle P. Rogers.

Once completed, the fiber optic signal interconnect system will provide high-speed communication between intersections along the corridor and the Traffic Management Center. The work is part of the county’s effort to improve the communications infrastructure supporting traffic signal operations.

Residents or motorists with questions about the construction can contact the Broward County Highway Construction and Engineering Division at 954-577-4555. Project Manager Chris Masullo can also be reached at 954-847-2676 or at [email protected].

Broward County is asking motorists and pedestrians for patience while crews carry out the intersection communication improvements along Commercial Boulevard.
