Broward County announces widespread Thanksgiving closures and service changes for November 27–28

Broward County, Florida – Broward County officials have released a detailed schedule of closures and changes to services as the local government gets ready for Thanksgiving. All government offices in the county will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, so that employees can celebrate the holiday. In-person services will stop for a while, but many online services will still be available through Broward.org, so residents can still get important things done during the break.

Several key departments will adjust their operations. The 311 Call Center and the Homeless Helpline will not be open for regular business, but they will be accessible for limited support for calls connected to homelessness from 10 AM to 2 PM. The NSU-Alvin Sherman Library and other libraries in the county will be closed both days. Anyone who wants to stream media or manage their accounts will still be able to access digital resources at any time.

The scheduling for county parks will be varied. There will be some exceptions, such Butterfly World, Carpenter House, Deerfield Island Park, the Markham Park Target Range, and administrative buildings, but most regional and neighborhood parks, nature centers, and natural areas will be open on Thanksgiving Day. There will be no After-School Program in neighborhood parks on either day. On Thursday and Friday, there will be a $3 holiday gate fee at regional parks, and holiday rental rates will apply.

Broward County Transit will switch to a Sunday service schedule on Thanksgiving Day. Customer service will be accessible until 8 PM to help people plan their trips. The express and breeze bus services won’t run on the holiday. Regular service will start again on Friday, although the administrative offices remain closed until the end of the week.

Animal Care facilities won’t be able to provide regular services, but you can still call 911 for help in an emergency. Families that need help from the Medical Examiner’s Office will still be able to get help around the clock. The Broward Addiction Recovery Center will keep its important medical detox and intake services available, but its administrative and outpatient offices will close. The Nancy J. Cotterman Center will keep doing emergency work, but it will stop doing administrative work.

On Thanksgiving Day, garbage, waste, and recycling collection will stop for a short time in the Broward Municipal Services District. Service will start up again on Monday. The county landfill will be closed on Thursday and Friday, but it will open again on Saturday, November 29.
