Broward County School Board approves salary increase for teachers in new agreement


Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The School Board of Broward County reached an agreement with the Broward Teachers Union—Education Professionals (BTU-EP) during a special meeting on February 27 in a decisive move to support its educators. This agreement, set to take effect for the 2023–24 academic year, promises to increase the base salary for both current and new teachers, marking a significant step towards enhancing educational quality and teacher satisfaction within the district.

A Closer Look at the Salary Increases

Under the new contract agreement, teachers will see a notable improvement in their earnings, which is outlined as follows:

  • Teachers on the Grandfathered salary schedule will enjoy a 3.65% salary increase.
  • Teachers on the Pay for Performance schedule will receive:
    • A 4.56% increase if rated Highly Effective
    • A 3.42% increase if rated Effective
  • The starting salary for new teachers will now be $50,266.

These salary enhancements are in addition to the referendum supplements, which are set to continue through the 2026/27 school year. Collectively, these adjustments represent an average total compensation increase of approximately 11% for Broward County Public Schools teachers, signifying a substantial investment in the teaching workforce.

Planning and Early Release Days

Furthermore, the School Board ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that lays out the specifics of planning and early release days for the 2024–25 school year. According to the MOU, there will be ten planning days allocated, half of which are scheduled at the start of the academic year, in addition to one early release day on February 14, 2025. This agreement underscores the district’s commitment to providing teachers with ample time for preparation and professional development, ensuring they are well-equipped to deliver high-quality education.
