Miami Beach, Florida – The City of Miami Beach, in a joint effort with the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, is set to pay tribute to a key figure in Mexican history, Benito Juárez. The celebration, sheduled for Thursday, March 21 at 4 p.m., aims to honor the legacy of Juárez, a revolutionary hero and former president of Mexico. This event, coordinated with the city’s Hispanic Affairs Committee, promises to be a memorable one, taking place in Collins Park at 21 Street and Collins Avenue, right by the 2-foot bronze bust of Juárez, a generous gift from the Mexican government to the city last year.
A Tribute to a Revolutionary Leader
“Benito Juárez is considered one of the most highly regarded presidents in Mexico’s history,” Miami Beach City Manager Alina T. Hudak remarked. She highlighted the enduring respect and admiration Juárez commands, over 150 years following his death, as a testament to his significant contributions to Mexico and the Americas.
Juárez’s leadership was pivotal during the 1800s as he spearheaded a liberal political and social revolution within Mexico. He triumphed over Maximilian of Austria, thwarting attempts to dominate Mexico. His enduring legacy includes the establishment of reform laws pivotal in advancing secular education and ensuring freedom of religion.
The Consul General of Mexico in Miami, Eliel Campuzano, expressed deep honor in recognizing Benito Juárez’s unwavering commitment to equality for all, “It is an honor that Mexico is present with the figure of Benito Juárez, who was a tireless defender of equal rights for all people without distinction of origin, race or color. Equality that is such lived without a doubt here in the emblematic City of Miami Beach, where diversity, plurality, and freedom of expression are recognized,” Campuzano said.
