Florida GOP boss drops epic victory speech after string of local landslides, Dems destroyed: “We will compete and win everywhere”

Florida – Republican candidates across Florida celebrated a series of municipal victories Tuesday night, offering the state party a welcome show of strength at the local level even as the broader national political landscape grows more complicated for the GOP.

From the Gulf Coast to communities along the Atlantic shoreline, Republican-backed candidates secured mayoral seats, city council posts, and commission positions in multiple municipalities.

Party leaders in Florida quickly framed the results as proof that Republicans remain competitive in grassroots races, where local issues and community connections often outweigh national political currents.

Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power pointed to the breadth of the victories as evidence that the party continues to build influence in local government.

According to Power, the results reinforce a strategy centered on contesting races at every level, including contests that historically attract less attention.

“These victories once again show that the Florida GOP will compete everywhere and win everywhere,” Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power said in a statement.

“There is no race too small when it comes to fighting for our communities and advancing conservative leadership at the local level. We are proud of every candidate who stepped up to serve and grateful to the volunteers and voters who helped deliver these victories.”

Among the winners in Central Florida, Sam Ruth captured Apopka’s City Council Seat 1 while Diane Velazquez secured Seat 2. Further south in Palm Beach County, Republican-backed candidates also performed strongly.

Linda Santiago won a seat on the Belle Glade City Commission, Michelle Grau earned a position on the Boca Raton City Council, and Lew Campton claimed a spot on the Palm Beach Town Council.

Along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Scott Tate was elected mayor of St. Pete Beach, while Lan Vaughan prevailed in the race for mayor of Indian Rocks Beach.

Additional local victories included Peter Noble and Judy Dugo, who won district seats in Greenacres, as well as Johnny Meier and Stephen Levin, both of whom secured positions on the Wellington Village Council.

Other successful candidates highlighted by party officials included Scott Shaw in Juno Beach, Bob Arrison in Kenneth City, and Selena Samios in Royal Palm Beach.

Following the results, the Republican Party of Florida indicated it plans to work with the newly elected local officials on initiatives tied to economic development and state policy priorities.

The victories, party leaders said, reflect sustained Republican engagement in municipal contests that are technically nonpartisan but increasingly carry political significance.

Yet the Florida results arrive during a period of mixed political signals for Republicans nationwide.

While the GOP celebrated its string of local wins in the Sunshine State, Democrats have simultaneously notched a series of surprising victories in special elections across the country. Those contests, held in places that have historically leaned Republican, have raised new questions among strategists about shifting voter dynamics ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

One of the most widely discussed outcomes occurred in South Florida, where Democrat Eileen Higgins captured the Miami mayoral race.

The result marked the first time in nearly three decades that a Democrat has held the office. Higgins defeated Republican businessman Emilio González by a margin approaching 20 percentage points, despite González receiving the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

The outcome quickly sparked debate among political commentators about what the race might signal for the future. Some analysts suggested that if the result had been reversed, a Republican winning in a traditionally Democratic stronghold, it would have been seen as a political earthquake.

Instead, the Miami contest added to concerns among some conservatives that the party’s standing in certain areas may be shifting.

Similar surprises emerged outside Florida. In Georgia, Democrat Eric Gisler won the state’s 121st House District in a special election, flipping a seat that Trump had carried by double digits. The race drew attention because it occurred after lawmakers had redrawn district lines in a process intended to strengthen Republican advantages in the state legislature.

Analysts noted that the outcome illustrated how unpredictable redistricting strategies can sometimes be. A district designed to lean conservative ultimately moved in the opposite direction, raising new debates inside Republican circles about the effectiveness of those efforts.

Democrats also scored a notable victory in Arkansas, where Alex Holladay captured the state’s 70th House District in a special election outside Little Rock. The seat had previously been held by Republicans, but Holladay defeated GOP candidate Bo Renshaw after a legal dispute forced the election to take place earlier than originally planned.

The district had already shown signs of becoming competitive in recent cycles. While Trump carried the area in 2020, later data suggested it was trending slightly toward Democrats in the 2024 presidential race.

Holladay’s victory added to a growing list of special election flips since Trump returned to the White House. According to election analysts cited by The Downballot, the Arkansas result marked the ninth time Democrats have captured a legislative seat from Republicans during that period.

The string of Democratic wins in states such as Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and Virginia has prompted some Republican officials to warn that the party cannot take traditionally favorable territory for granted.

Even so, the municipal results in Florida highlight a different side of the political picture, one in which Republicans continue to maintain strong networks in local communities.

For the Florida GOP, the latest elections serve as a reminder that political momentum can move in multiple directions at once. While national races capture most headlines, city halls and town councils remain crucial battlegrounds where parties build influence from the ground up.
