Governor DeSantis declares August 1 as Hulk Hogan Day to celebrate wrestling icon’s life

Tallahassee, Florida – On Friday, August 1, 2025, flags across Florida will be at half-staff to honor Terry Bollea, the famous professional wrestler widely known by his ring name Hulk Hogan. Governor Ron DeSantis issued the official directive following Hogan’s death on July 24, calling the tribute a way to honor the larger-than-life legacy of one of Florida’s most beloved residents.

Hogan was born in Augusta, Georgia, but moved to Tampa when he was young. There, he would lay the groundwork for a career that would transform sports entertainment forever. He first stepped into the wrestling ring in 1977, eventually skyrocketing to global fame through his work with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Hogan became a household figure in the 1980s and 1990s because of his charm, powerful moves, and memorable catchphrases. He inspired millions of fans across generations.

His impact on the industry earned him a place in the WWE Hall of Fame not once, but twice. The first time was as a solo wrestler in 2005, and the second time was as a member of the famous New World Order faction in 2020. Hogan was known by many as a proud Floridian who spent much of his life in the Tampa Bay area, even though he was famous and won championship belts.

Governor DeSantis proclaimed August 1 to be “Hulk Hogan Day in Florida” to honor his achievements to entertainment and his cultural significance. As part of the celebration, flags will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset at the State Capitol in Tallahassee and at all state and local facilities in Pinellas County, where Hogan lived for much of his life.
