Tamarac, Florida – A teenage driver from Tamarac got into trouble with the law after a high-speed chase and crash. Julian David Ortega, 19, was arrested over the weekend. He faces charges for reckless driving and fleeing from a police officer, which led to a crash and injuries.
The incident happened on Sunday around 9:20 p.m. A Florida Highway Patrol officer was on duty on Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade. The officer saw two cars traveling at an excessive rate of speed, reaching 112 mph. When the officer tried to stop them, one car complied, but the other, a red Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Ortega, did not.
Ortega’s car, while trying to escape at about 90 mph, ran into traffic caused by an earlier accident. He tried to weave through the traffic but ended up hitting a Jeep. The crash made his car spin and stop on the shoulder of the road, facing the opposite direction.
After the crash, Ortega was arrested and taken to the hospital. He was then sent to jail. The people in the Jeep were also taken to a hospital for their injuries.
As of Tuesday, Ortega was still in jail.
