Tallahassee, Florida – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff following the death of Bill Gunter, a dedicated public servant with a notable career in both state and national politics.
Gunter passed away on April 8, 2024, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy characterized by his steadfast dedication to serving the people of Florida.
A Distinguished Career
Bill Gunter’s political journey began in 1966, when he was first elected to the Florida Senate. His commitment to public service took him to the U.S. Congress in 1972, where he served until he made a significant career shift in 1976.
Returning to state government, Gunter took on the roles of Insurance Commissioner, State Treasurer, and Fire Marshal, demonstrating a versatile and impactful career. He also briefly entered the gubernatorial race in 1986 but withdrew from the campaign.
A Tribute to His Service
To pay tribute to Gunter’s lifelong dedication to public service, Governor DeSantis stated, “As a mark of respect, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Leon County Courthouse in Tallahassee, Florida, the City Hall of Tallahassee, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset, on Monday, April 29, 2024.”
The flags will be lowered as a symbol of honor and remembrance for a man who devoted much of his life to the improvement of his community and country.
