Florida gas prices fall for third straight week ahead of holiday travel surge

Florida – AAA says that gas prices across Florida continue to go down, which is good news for drivers as millions get ready to travel for the holidays at the end of the year. The consistent drop comes at a significant time, since driving is projected to be the most popular way to get around during the holidays.

AAA says that 7.5 million individuals from Florida will travel during the holidays, and most of them, about 6.7 million, plan to drive. Lower fuel costs could ease the financial burden for those hitting the road, especially families traveling long distances.

There is a distinct declining trend in statewide averages. Florida gas prices have been going down for three weeks in a row now. This trend started earlier in the season. In the last 23 days, the average price across the state has gone down by 31 cents a gallon. As of Sunday, the average price for a gallon of gas was $2.81, which is 11 cents cheaper than it was a week earlier.

AAA executives feel that current pricing is significant. The average price on Sunday was the lowest daily statewide price since May 2021, showing how big the current drop has been.

“Florida gas prices have declined for three consecutive weeks,” Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, said in a news release. “If current trends continue, holiday travelers will find the lowest gas prices in years.”

Prices do change based on where you live, and certain urban regions still pay more than others. West Palm Beach–Boca Raton has the highest gas prices in the state, at $2.95 a gallon. Gainesville is next at $2.91, while Naples is last at $2.87.

Drivers in some sections of Northwest Florida are saving the most money on the lower end of the range. The average price for gas in Crestview–Fort Walton Beach is $2.66 per gallon, which is the lowest. The average price in Panama City and Pensacola is $2.69.

As the holidays get closer, many Florida drivers are probably happy that prices continue to go down as they make their final preparations and get ready to hit the road.
