Hialeah, Florida – On the morning of April 26, 2024, the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department will collaborate with Million Trees Miami-Dade County and Coca-Cola Beverages Florida, LLC (Coke Florida) for a significant tree planting event. This initiative will take place at North Pointe Community Center.

Cooling the Community with Canopy Coverage

The scheduled event will involve planting 80 trees at the North Pointe Community Center, a vibrant hub for recreation in Miami-Dade County known for its diverse programs and amenities that promote health and wellness. This effort is crucial, especially considering the surrounding area’s low urban tree canopy percentage, which currently stands at just nine percent.

The addition of these trees is expected to increase shade and reduce temperatures in the neighborhood, making it a cooler place for residents ahead of the hot summer season. This is particularly important in areas like this one, where the existing urban tree canopy is alarmingly low, with some areas around the park at only eight percent.

A Commitment to Sustainable Growth

This tree planting event also aligns with the broader mission of Million Trees Miami-Dade County, which is to achieve a minimum of 30 percent tree canopy cover across Miami-Dade County. Coke Florida’s involvement demonstrates their commitment to sustainability and improving the environmental wellbeing of the communities they serve.

The event also marks a milestone for Million Trees Miami-Dade County, as it completes its 2024 tree planting projects at the park. By the end of the event, a total of 500 trees will have been planted in this area, significantly contributing to the reduction of the urban heat island effect and enhancing the overall quality of life for the local population.
