Miami-Dade to honor distinguished leaders at the fifth annual Community Pillar Awards

Miami, Florida – The Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Heritage Planning Committee is set to honor significant contributors to the African American community at its annual “Community Pillar” awards and “Young Pillar” scholarship presentation. This event will take place on June 22, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Miami Biscayne Bay Marriott, located at 1633 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL 33132. Those wishing to attend must make reservations through Eventbrite and can expect a ticket price of $75, payable at the venue on the day of the event.

Honoring Leaders and Innovators

This year’s celebration will acknowledge the remarkable efforts of individuals who have significantly impacted the local community through their professional and personal contributions. The 2024 Community Pillar Honorees include:

  • Dr. Edmund Abaka, a prominent figure in academic circles, currently serving as the Director of Graduate Studies & Associate Director for the Center for Global Black Studies at the University of Miami.
  • Dr. Harriette Wilson-Greene, the Senior Minister at Omega Power and Praise Ministry, Inc., recognized for her spiritual leadership and community service.
  • Dr. Mariama Jaiteh, a Cultural Anthropologist and the founder of the Gambian American Foundation, Inc., celebrated for her contributions to cultural understanding and community integration.
  • Daniella G. Pierre, President of the NAACP Miami-Dade County Branch, who has been instrumental in advocating for civil rights and equality.
  • Dr. Edward G. Robinson, an Administrator at Dade County Public Schools and the Founder of “Readman,” known for his initiatives in education and literacy.
  • Toni Gilliam-Harrison, Esq., Attorney and President of Dade County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., who has made significant legal and community contributions.

In a special tribute, the “Jason Jenkins Corporate Community Pillar” award will be presented to Derek Fleming, a developer and managing partner for the Michelin award-winning restaurant, Red Rooster Overtown. This award, renamed in honor of the late Jason Jenkins, celebrates corporate leaders who exemplify dedication to public service.

Supporting the Next Generation

In addition to recognizing established leaders, the event will spotlight the future by awarding scholarships to seven deserving “Young Pillars” who are beginning or continuing their higher education journeys. This year’s scholarship recipients include students from a range of prestigious institutions, ensuring that the legacy of community leadership continues with the next generation.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Engagement

The event will also feature a collaboration with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitor Bureau’s Black Hospitality Initiative (BHI), which focuses on increasing the participation of African Americans in Miami’s visitor industry. This partnership highlights the community’s broad efforts to support educational and professional development within the hospitality sector.
