Pompano Beach to unveil towering monument honoring first amphibious landing of American forces in 1776
Pompano Beach, Florida – A new chapter of American history will soon take its place along the waterfront of Pompano Beach. On Saturday, March 14, the City of Pompano Beach and the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution will host a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to dedicate the First Amphibious Landing Monument at the entrance to the Fisher Family Pier.
The public ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. at 222 N. Pompano Beach Boulevard and promises to blend history with pageantry. Visitors will witness a dramatic presentation featuring forty honor guard members carrying historic flags, while the rhythmic sounds of a traditional drum and fife corps help recreate the atmosphere of the Revolutionary era. Distinguished speakers will also address the crowd, marking the occasion as a meaningful moment for both the city and American history.
For weeks, those walking along the pier may have noticed construction taking shape near the Bait Shop. That work is now nearing completion as crews prepare to unveil the towering tribute.
Standing 20 feet tall and weighing approximately 17,000 pounds, the monument honors the first amphibious landing carried out by American forces during the Revolutionary War.
The historic event dates back to March 1776. At the time, Naval Commander Esek Hopkins ordered a daring naval expedition during the early stages of the conflict. Continental Sailors and Marines, led by Captain Samuel Nicholas, carried out an assault on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas. Their objective was to seize Fort Montagu and Fort Nassau, marking the first amphibious landing conducted by American forces on foreign soil.

Despite the significance of the 1776 operation, recognition of the event has been limited. Until now, the only known marker acknowledging the landing has been a small plaque at Fort Montagu in the Bahamas. The new monument in Pompano Beach ensures that the story will be permanently honored and shared on American soil.
An informational plaque accompanying the monument will provide visitors with insight into the strategy and bravery behind the mission and its place in early American military history.
Supported by contributions from businesses, organizations, Visit Lauderdale, and donors nationwide, the monument now stands ready to become a lasting landmark along Pompano Beach’s shoreline.
