Broward County marks MLK Day with office shutdowns and limited public service hours

Broward County, Florida – On Monday, January 19, Broward County government offices will be closed for the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. In-person services will be closed for the day, but residents can still use plenty of resources on the county’s website. This means that important information and digital services will still be available throughout the holiday.

Many services that are open to the public will not be running on their usual timetables. The 311 Call Center will be closed for the holiday. The Homeless Helpline will also be closed, but there will be some help available after hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. People who need help during that time can call 954-563-4357.

The Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library and all other county libraries will be closed. Despite the closures, those who use them will still be able to search the online catalog, renew or place holds on items, and access a lot of digital content. These are eBooks, eMagazines, free online lessons, and movies, TV shows, and music that you may stream or download.

Most county parks and outdoor areas will stay open. People will be able to use regional and neighborhood parks, as well as nature centers and natural areas. However, some facilities will be closed according to their regular timetables. Regional parks will charge a fee to enter on holidays, but neighborhood parks won’t have scheduled programs. Visitors should ask park partners and concessionaires directly about their holiday hours.

There will be no breaks in public transit services. County transit will operate on a regular weekday schedule, and customer service representatives will be available starting at 6 a.m. to assist with trip planning for bus routes and paratransit services. There will also be staff at a number of major transit centers during the day.

Animal care administrative offices will be closed, but you can still call 911 for help with animal attacks, injuries, or police assistance. You can call in non-emergency animal-related issues, like pets that are lost or located.

The county’s airports and seaport will still remain open, but their administrative offices will be closed. Airport terminals, marine services, and port operations will all keep running smoothly, and help will be available 24/7.

People living in the Broward Municipal Services District will still get their garbage and recyclables picked up on time. The county landfill will be closed on Monday and will open again on Tuesday, January 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
