Broward families can adopt vaccinated and microchipped pets without paying a fee until July 26

Broward County, Florida – A shelter cage can feel like a small world. For one dog or cat in Broward County, however, the next nine days could open the door to an entirely different life.

Broward County Animal Care is again joining the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s nationwide Empty the Shelters campaign, waiving adoption fees through Sunday, July 26. The effort is designed to move more animals into permanent homes while freeing shelter space for the next pets that arrive needing food, medical attention and protection.

Dogs and cats of different ages, breeds and sizes are available for adoption at the county shelter, located at 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. The facility will welcome potential adopters from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the event period.

Although the adoption fee is being removed, the animals will still leave with important veterinary care already completed. Every adopted pet is spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going home, reducing some of the early costs and responsibilities families often face after bringing home a new companion.

The broader goal reaches beyond a single adoption. When one animal leaves the shelter, staff gain room and resources to assist another homeless pet waiting for help.

“Every adoption removes a barrier for another animal waiting for help,” Broward County Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell said.

“Through our partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, we’re making it easier for families to say ‘yes’ to adoption while creating much-needed space to care for more homeless pets. When you adopt, you’re not just changing one animal’s life-you make it possible for us to serve the next one, too.”

The Empty the Shelters campaign focuses on one of the most common obstacles for prospective adopters: upfront cost. By covering adoption fees for a limited time, the partnership gives residents an added reason to visit the shelter, meet the animals and consider whether they are ready for the long-term commitment of pet ownership.

County officials are encouraging people to come in person rather than judging pets only by photographs or descriptions. A shelter visit gives families a chance to see an animal’s personality, ask questions and better understand which pet may fit their home and routine.

Residents can view available animals and learn more about adoption through Broward County Animal Care. The same website also provides information for people interested in fostering, volunteering or donating.

For the pets waiting inside the Fort Lauderdale shelter, the campaign is more than a temporary discount. It is a chance to trade a kennel for a home—and to make space for another animal that has not arrived yet.
