Broward County launches free advanced heart screening program for residents 45 and older

Broward County, Florida – A new health program funded by the county is giving people in Broward a rare chance: free advanced heart screening.

Residents of Broward County and the Florida Panthers who are 45 years old or older can get free heart tests through the Broward County/Florida Panthers Preventive Heart Program. Broward County’s Board of County Commissioners pays for the program, while the Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital does the testing. People who fit the medical requirements won’t have to pay, and neither will their insurance companies.

A cardiac CT scan that looks for early indicators of heart disease is the main part of the program. Participants may specifically undergo coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA).

The scan uses a small amount of radiation and an iodine-based contrast solution to provide clear pictures of the coronary arteries. Doctors can see plaque buildup, narrowing, or blockages that may not yet be causing problems.

There may be another test for people who can’t get iodine, including those who are allergic to it. A CT calcium score test doesn’t need contrast dye and can find harder plaque, but it can’t find softer plaque deposits.

Health professionals underline how important it is to find things early. Heart disease remains the most common cause of death in the United States. Many people have mammograms and colonoscopies to find certain malignancies early, but insurance generally doesn’t cover similar imaging tests for heart problems. This program’s goal is to fill in that gap by finding dangers before a heart attack happens.

A blocked coronary artery can have deadly effects. Patients and their doctors can control risk, change treatment regimens, and lower the risk of major heart problems by finding concealed accumulation early.

There are things to think about, just as with any other medical test. The CCTA uses radiation and contrast dye, which might cause allergic responses and other problems. County officials suggest that people talk to their own doctors about the pros and downsides.

People who live in Broward County who want to get screened can fill out an application to see whether they qualify. You can get more information by emailing [email protected] or calling 786-742-4914.
