Broward County Public Schools show strong performance in Florida statewide assessments

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Florida Department of Education released the statewide results of the 2023/24 Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) at the beginning of this week, on July 1, 2024. These assessments, administered three times a year, evaluate student progress in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). Additionally, results for the state’s End of Course exams in Biology, Civics, U.S. History, Algebra, and Geometry, as well as the Statewide Science Assessments for grades 5 and 8, were also published.

Exceptional Performance by Broward County Public Schools

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) demonstrated remarkable progress, outpacing the state in multiple areas. The district’s students excelled in all grades for English Language Arts, grades 3-5 and 7 for Mathematics, and End Of Course exams in Algebra, Biology, Civics, and U.S. History.

Notable Achievements in FAST and End of Course Exams

Based on the third and final assessment of FAST in the spring of 2024, BCPS students scored higher than the state average in 12 out of 14 tested areas and grade levels. Additionally, they increased or maintained their scores in Math and ELA at every grade level compared to the previous year.

Additional Highlights from 2023/24

Comparing the results to the prior school year (2022/23), BCPS students showed significant improvements in various subjects:

  • Grade 5 Science: Improved by 6 percentage points to 52% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • Grade 8 Science: Improved by 3 percentage points to 41% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • End of Course Exams in Spring Biology: Improved by 7 percentage points to 70% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • End of Course Exams in Spring Algebra: Improved by 9 percentage points to 58% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • End of Course Exams in Spring Geometry: Improved by 9 percentage points to 53% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • End of Course Exams in Spring Civics: Improved by 4 percentage points to 68% of students scoring on grade level or above.
  • End of Course Exams in Spring U.S. History: Improved by 6 percentage points to 69% of students scoring on grade level or above.
