Broward County urges pet owners to join Tags for Life for safer communities
Broward County, Florida – Broward County Animal Care encourages people to sign up for its Tags for Life program. This program makes it easy to register pets and helps keep animals and the community safe. The initiative makes it easier to follow a long-standing law that says all dogs must be registered and wear a rabies tag from the county.
With the Tags for Life system, pet owners just need to register their pet once and get a tag that stays with them for life. This means they don’t have to change the tag every year. Owners don’t have to buy a new tag every year; they just pay the amount to keep their registration up to date. It costs $25 a year to register a dog or cat that has been microchipped. For pets that aren’t microchipped, the charge is $55.
All dogs, cats, and ferrets must get a rabies shot according to county rules. Also, dogs and cats must wear a Broward County Pet Rabies Registration Tag on their collars. Rabies is a very bad disease that can kill both people and animals. Vaccination protects each pet and lowers the chance that the virus may spread to other pets.
If a pet goes missing, the registration tag is very important. Every year, Broward County Animal Care takes care of more than 8,500 lost, stray, or given-up dogs and cats. A visible rabies tag makes it easy for shelter personnel or a resident who finds a lost animal to find the owner quickly, which makes it more likely that the animal will be found quickly.

The money made from pet registration fees goes straight to helping animals in need across the county. Money helps pay for food, medical treatment, and other important services for animals living in county shelters. The money also goes to sterilization programs, which help keep the number of pets down and make it easier for shelters to take care of them.
