Plantation drivers face limited closures as Broward launches bridge project lasting through May 2027
Broward County, Florida – Work is now underway on a major bridge rehabilitation project along Peters Road in Plantation, but Broward County says its construction approach is designed to keep much of the disruption out of drivers’ way.
Construction began Sept. 14 on the County-owned bridge, launching a project that will continue through May 2027. Much of the rehabilitation is planned beneath the bridge rather than on its driving surface, allowing crews to address structural needs while limiting prolonged lane closures.
The project is being handled by Broward County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division and is funded through the Penny for Transportation Surtax, also known as MAP Broward. The bridge is located in County Commission District 5, represented by Commissioner Steve Geller.

According to the County, the work will address structural deficiencies identified during the most recent Florida Department of Transportation bridge inspection.
To reduce the effect on motorists, nearby businesses and residents, crews will use floating platforms in the canal to perform most of the rehabilitation work from underneath the bridge. That approach eliminates the need for additional lane closures on the bridge deck during much of the construction period and is intended to avoid major traffic disruptions.

Drivers will still encounter temporary restrictions during one part of the project.
Single-lane closures will be required for approximately four weeks when crews begin deck waterproofing and asphalt resurfacing. Broward County said driveways and sidewalks will remain accessible during that phase.
Variable message boards will also be installed to alert motorists and pedestrians about construction activity, lane changes and other conditions associated with the work.

The Peters Road rehabilitation is part of the County’s ongoing bridge maintenance work and is focused on correcting the deficiencies identified through the inspection process while keeping the roadway operating during construction.
The current schedule calls for the project to be completed in May 2027.
