Tamarac April 7 commission meeting turns into night of tribute honoring service art and community impact

Tamarac, Florida – What began as a routine City Commission meeting in Tamarac on April 7 turned into a heartfelt public tribute to service, creativity, courage and community spirit, as city leaders paused official business to recognize a wide range of people and causes that continue to leave a mark on local life.

One of the most notable moments of the evening came with a proclamation honoring the life and legacy of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer.

The meeting also shined a light on individuals whose work has touched Tamarac in direct and meaningful ways.

Karen Dewar was named the recipient of the Community Hero Award, recognized for her strong involvement in the city and her continued support of the community. Her recognition reflected the kind of everyday leadership that often happens quietly but resonates widely.

The commission also used the meeting to draw attention to several important observances in April.

April 15, 2026, was officially designated as World Art Day, celebrating the role of creativity and artistic expression in community life. At the same time, April 2026 was proclaimed as Paralyzed Veterans of America Awareness Month, bringing visibility to the experiences and contributions of paralyzed veterans.

Autism Awareness Month was also recognized, with special acknowledgment given to Dr. Shirley Sims for her steady dedication to supporting children on the autism spectrum and their families.

Her work was highlighted as a meaningful example of compassion paired with commitment, helping uplift families who often rely on consistent advocacy and care.

Public safety and service were also front and center during the meeting. Firefighter James Murad was recognized for his accomplishments and named the 2025 Tamarac Firefighter of the Year, an honor that underscored his exemplary service to the community.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office also took part in the evening’s recognitions, honoring Deputy Raeme Weldon as Employee of the Month and welcoming BSO Explorers to Tamarac.
