Broward County leads Severe Weather Awareness Week to enhance storm preparedness

Broward County, Florida – Florida is urging residents to remain cautious against unpredictable weather conditions as it observes Severe Weather Awareness Week from February 3rd to 7th, 2025. The observance, led by Broward County’s Emergency Management Division, emphasizes the importance of preparedness for a range of severe weather threats, from lightning strikes to tornadoes.

Florida, sometimes referred to as the lightning capital of North America, has specific weather challenges. Not only is lightning a big threat, but rip currents can cause serious problems and usually kill more people than storms every year. Especially considering past severe weather events in the area, the awareness week arrives at a crucial tim.

Catastrophic flooding in Broward County in recent years has resulted in emergency announcements made by Governor Ron DeSantis. Especially in April 2023, the county experienced what was said to be once-in- a-millennium rainfall, leading to extreme flooding outside of usual hurricane season. Two months later, more floods highlighted how sensitive the region was to severe storms.

The week is structured to inform and prepare the public for different weather phenomena each day:

  • Monday focuses on the dangers of lightning.
  • Tuesday is dedicated to marine hazards and rip currents.
  • Wednesday highlights risks associated with thunderstorms and tornadoes.
  • Thursday covers hurricanes and flooding.
  • Friday addresses temperature extremes and wildfires.

Residents are advised to not only keep informed but also actively update and rehearse their emergency plans. Local officials urge residents to make use of this opportunity to improve their knowledge of the hazards connected to the weather that may strike anywhere, not only during the hurricane season.

For ongoing updates and emergency information, Broward County officials also advise following their X and Facebook social media accounts. For those seeking more in-depth knowledge on how to prepare for specific weather challenges, resources and guidance are available on FloridaDisaster.org.
