Broward Sheriff’s Captain David Franks joins Tamarac event promoting inclusive community leadership

Tamarac, Florida – For some adults in Tamarac, community service can mean more than volunteering for a few hours. It can become a place to make friends, practice leadership and have a stronger say in the community around them.

That idea will be at the center of a free gathering on August 27, when the Kiwanis Club of Tamarac introduces residents to Aktion Club, a service organization created specifically for adults with disabilities.

The interest meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. Adults with disabilities ages 18 and older are invited, along with family members, friends and other community supporters. Snacks will be provided, and no previous experience or commitment is required.

Captain David Franks, who leads the Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District, will attend as the evening’s special guest.

Franks brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience to the gathering. He began his career with the Miami Springs Police Department in 1997 before joining the Broward Sheriff’s Office in 2001. Over the years, he has served in several supervisory and executive officer roles and helped develop community-focused efforts that included overdose prevention and crime-reduction teams. He took command of the Tamarac District in 2025.

The larger focus of the evening, however, will be introducing prospective members to Aktion Club and what participation can offer.

Created through Kiwanis International, Aktion Club is a service leadership program for adults living with disabilities. Members take part in community projects while developing skills involving leadership, teamwork and decision-making. The program also gives participants opportunities to build friendships, become more independent and take active roles in their communities.

Local Aktion Clubs are sponsored by Kiwanis organizations, which provide support and guidance while members help plan and carry out their own activities and service projects.

Organizers say Thursday’s meeting will allow interested residents to meet others, learn how the program works and explore ways they can participate or support the club.

The City of Tamarac also promoted the gathering through its official Facebook page, describing Aktion Club as an opportunity to “make new friends, build leadership skills, serve your community and make a difference.”

Anyone interested can attend the August 27 meeting at the Tamarac Community Center. The gathering is designed not only for potential members, but also for families, friends and residents interested in supporting a more inclusive form of community service in Tamarac.
