Tamarac offers free cancer and wellness screenings in one-stop September health event

Tamarac, Florida – A routine health check can be easy to postpone. On September 3, Tamarac residents will have a chance to take care of several important screenings in one visit, and without a screening fee.

The City of Tamarac is partnering with the University of Miami Health System’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to provide free cancer and wellness screenings at the Tamarac Community Center. The four-hour event will bring several types of preventive health services together under one roof.

Screenings will be available Thursday, September 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, located at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd.

The event will include screenings for cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer. Hepatitis C screening will also be offered. In addition, participants can receive a broader health screening that checks body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol.

That combination gives residents an opportunity to look at more than one part of their health during the same event. While the cancer screenings are a major focus, the additional checks can provide basic information about common health indicators such as blood pressure and blood sugar.

Not every screening will be appropriate for every visitor. Eligibility will depend on factors including a participant’s age and individual risk factors. Residents attending the event should therefore expect screening availability to be determined based on those criteria.

The partnership with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center brings specialized cancer screening resources directly into the community rather than requiring residents to seek out each service separately.

For people who have been putting off a screening, September 3 offers a specific date and location to get it done. The event also gives eligible participants access to several preventive services during a single four-hour window.

The free screenings will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. Residents interested in participating should keep in mind that cancer screening eligibility varies by age and risk factors.
