Broward launches search for residents to review county charter and recommend future changes
Broward County, Florida – Broward County residents will soon have an opportunity to help shape the rules that guide their local government. The county is preparing to establish a new commission responsible for reviewing its governing charter, and officials are looking for residents willing to take part.
The opportunity does not come around often. Broward County conducts this comprehensive review every 12 years, making the upcoming process an important chance for public involvement in decisions that could influence county government for years to come.
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has officially opened applications for the 2027 Charter Review Commission (CRC). Interested residents have until Friday, November 13, 2026, to submit their applications for consideration.

Appointments are expected during the County Commission’s first meeting in January 2027, when the newly selected members will begin their work.
The commission will have 19 members. Each of Broward County’s nine commissioners will select two representatives from their respective districts, accounting for 18 appointments. One additional member will receive an at-large appointment.
The Charter Review Commission has a significant responsibility. Its central task is to examine the Broward County Charter, identify provisions that may need updating, and propose amendments or revisions.
The charter essentially serves as the county government’s constitution. It establishes the framework under which Broward County operates, making periodic reviews an important part of the county’s governing process.
Article VI of the charter requires the County Commission to appoint a review commission at its first January meeting in 2027 and every 12 years afterward.
Not everyone is eligible to participate.
Applicants must be registered voters in Broward County. Current county employees, Florida legislators, county commissioners, and county constitutional officers are not eligible to serve on the commission.
Those selected will begin their service in January 2027 and remain on the commission through the day following the 2028 general election.
The extended service period gives commission members time to conduct their review and develop proposed changes before their terms conclude.
County officials have made the application available online through the official Broward County Charter Review Commission website.
After completing and submitting the application, residents will receive an on-screen confirmation indicating that their submission has been received.
Anyone needing additional information about the application process or eligibility requirements can contact the Broward County Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at 954-357-7347 or email [email protected].
With the November 13 deadline approaching, eligible residents interested in participating in this once-every-12-years review have a limited window to apply. The next commission will play a direct role in examining the county’s governing document and recommending potential changes for the future.
