Truck-mounted sprayers to battle mosquitoes across Broward County in the coming days

Broward County, Florida – Mosquito control efforts are ramping up in southern Broward County as officials prepare to launch a targeted larvicide spraying operation across several neighborhoods. Weather allowing, Broward County’s Mosquito Control Section will use truck-mounted sprayers nightly from May 5 to May 10, 2025 to assist in reducing the spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Spraying planned between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night will direct the operation toward particular areas of Hollywood, Miramar, Pembroke Park, and West Park. Targeting the larvae of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus—two species known to transmit diseases including dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya—the proactive technique seeks to stop the mosquito population before it reaches adulthood.

Often found in daily items like birdbaths, plant saucers, and even ornamental landscape plants like bromeliads and traveler’s palms, these mosquitoes lay their eggs in tiny pools of stagnant water. By eliminating them at the larval stage, health officials hope to minimize potential outbreaks and reduce nuisance biting.

The county will employ VectoBac WDG, a larvicide using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), to guarantee safety. This naturally occurring bacterium is biodegradable and poses no danger to people, pets, bees, aquatic life, or environmentally sensitive regions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also authorized it; the Organic Materials Review Institute has certified it. The World Health Organization mentions it among its suggested items for mosquito control.

Coordinating the work with the Florida Department of Health and local code enforcement authorities, Broward County’s Mosquito Control Section is leading the effort. Working together, these partners are controlling mosquito populations and lowering the danger of disease transmission across all 31 Broward municipalities.

Officials are pushing people and business owners to examine their homes for standing water—particularly following rain to help them help themselves. Preventing mosquito breeding can be significantly assisted by simple activities such as cleaning fountains, draining unused planters, emptying buckets, and changing birdbath water periodically.
