Broward County hosts mega adoption event this weekend in Hollywood as local shelters face growing intake
Hollywood, Florida – A major push to place shelter dogs into homes is coming to Hollywood this weekend, as Broward County joins several South Florida animal welfare groups for the Petco Love Florida MEGA Adoption Event.
The free dog adoption event is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at T.Y. Park, located at 3300 N. Park Road in Hollywood. Broward County Animal Care and Broward County Parks and Recreation are working alongside Miami-Dade County Animal Services, the Humane Society of Broward County and the Humane Society of Greater Miami for the one-day effort.
The goal is direct and urgent: move adoptable dogs out of crowded shelters and into homes.
According to data from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, nearly 73 percent of government-operated shelters are seeing a rise in dogs entering their facilities. That pressure is being felt locally, too, as agencies work to care for more animals while trying to increase adoptions.

Adoption fees will be waived during the event, giving families a chance to meet available dogs on-site without the usual adoption cost. Pet registration fees will still apply, and visitors should also expect the park’s weekend gate admission fee.
“Animal shelters, including Broward County Animal Care, are under tremendous pressure as more pets enter our care than leave through adoption,” said Doug Brightwell, Animal Care Director. “This event is an opportunity for our community to be part of the solution. Every adoption creates space for another pet in need and helps us move closer to ending shelter overcrowding.”
The event is designed to bring adoptable dogs closer to the public in a setting that already fits the spirit of pet ownership. T.Y. Park offers open space, walking areas and a family-friendly backdrop, making it a natural place for residents to meet a possible new companion.

Dan West, Broward County Parks and Recreation Director, said the connection between parks and dogs is easy to understand.
“Parks and dogs have a lot in common. They reduce stress and anxiety, and encourage an active, healthy lifestyle that includes social interaction among dog lovers and owners, building a sense of community. We hope you and your new pet will visit T.Y. Park or one of our other regional parks, which allow dogs on six-foot leashes, or visit our leash-free dog parks at Markham Park and Quiet Waters Park,” West said.
The Petco Love Florida MEGA Adoption Event also reflects a broader regional approach. By bringing Broward and Miami-Dade agencies together with humane organizations, the event aims to create more positive outcomes for dogs in need while easing the strain on shelter systems.
