Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has announced the appointment of Dr. Howard Hepburn as the new Superintendent of Schools, marking a significant leadership transition for one of Florida’s largest school districts. This change follows the unexpected retirement announcement from Superintendent Dr. Peter B. Licata, who cited medical reasons for his departure. The transition took effect immediately after the Broward County School Board’s approval during their meeting on April 16, 2024.

A Seamless Transition

Dr. Hepburn steps into his new role with an extensive background in educational leadership within the district. Prior to his appointment as Superintendent, he significantly contributed to BCPS as the Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. His rich career in education spans over two decades, during which he has held various positions including instructional superintendent, classroom teacher, principal, assistant principal, coach, and dean.

School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff expressed gratitude towards Dr. Licata for his dedication and service, emphasizing the community’s understanding and support for his decision to prioritize his health and family. Alhadeff warmly welcomed Dr. Hepburn, highlighting the board’s confidence in his ability to lead the district forward.
