Miami Beach, Florida – The City of Miami Beach closed the popular Flagler Monument Island to boaters over the Memorial Day weekend. This decision came in response to ongoing issues with litter left by some visitors. The island will be accessible again starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.
Ensuring Responsibility and Preservation
“This is a case of boaters failing to behave responsibly around one of our natural treasures,” explained Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones when he announced the closure. The city will have enforcement officers present on the island to ensure that boaters respect the closure and the natural environment.
A Historic and Ecological Treasure
Flagler Monument Island, built by Miami Beach founding father Carl Fisher more than 100 years ago, features a 96-foot obelisk dedicated to Henry M. Flagler. Flagler was a pioneer of modern Florida, known for founding the East Coast Florida Railway and building a hotel empire in the state. The island, which is only accessible by boat, has long been a cherished landmark with its allegorical sculptures at the base of the obelisk.

During the pandemic, when the island was closed for an extended period, it became the site of the first documented nest of North American ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) in the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve.
Addressing the Litter Issue
Despite its beauty and historical significance, Flagler Monument Island has struggled with litter issues. Boating enthusiasts have frequently left behind substantial piles of trash, including numerous empty beer cans and bottles. The closure aims to protect the island from further damage and preserve its natural and historical significance for future visitors.
The City of Miami Beach urges all boaters to respect the closure and act responsibly to help maintain the cleanliness and beauty of this treasured site.
