Governor Ron DeSantis unveils permanent tribute to President Abraham Lincoln in The Villages ahead of America’s 250th birthday

The Villages, Florida – Florida has added another historic monument to its growing collection of tributes honoring influential American leaders, as Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a new statue of President Abraham Lincoln in The Villages. The ceremony comes just days before the United States marks its 250th anniversary and forms part of the state’s broader America250FL initiative, which celebrates the people and events that helped shape the nation.

State officials said the monument will stand as a permanent reminder of Lincoln’s leadership during one of the most difficult periods in American history. They described the statue as a tribute to his role in preserving the Union, defending the Constitution, and advancing freedom during the Civil War.

Governor DeSantis said the monument reflects Lincoln’s lasting importance in American history and the values he represented.

“With America’s 250th anniversary just a few days away, I was proud to unveil a new statue of President Abraham Lincoln,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “His statue will stand here in The Villages as a symbol of dedication to country and the sacrifice required to preserve this nation. President Lincoln was guided by the principles contained in the Declaration of Independence as he fought the Dred Scott decision and judicial supremacy, advocated for free labor, led the effort to abolish slavery, and worked to preserve the union.”

The Villages was selected as the home of the monument because of the community’s reputation for patriotism and civic involvement. State leaders said they expect the statue to become a lasting landmark for both residents and visitors.

Honoring Lincoln’s legacy and America’s history

Born in Kentucky in 1809, Abraham Lincoln rose from modest beginnings despite receiving little formal education. He eventually became the nation’s 16th president and guided the country through the Civil War, the most serious internal conflict in American history.

During his presidency, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, supported the passage of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, and repeatedly emphasized the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence while working to preserve the United States as one nation.

Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd said Lincoln’s respect for the country’s founding principles made him one of America’s greatest leaders.

“President Abraham Lincoln held a profound respect for our Founding Fathers and the Constitution,” said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. “As one of the nation’s greatest leaders, he guided us through our darkest hours, preserving a nation founded on liberty and justice for all.”

The unveiling also highlights Florida’s continued effort to recognize historical figures whose leadership shaped the country. Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA, said the monument fits within a larger statewide effort to celebrate America’s milestone anniversary.

“Florida is rightly honoring great Americans with our statue series, and Lincoln stands among them,” said Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “We’re going all out to celebrate America 250 in a meaningful way, creating enduring tributes that future generations of residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.”

The Lincoln monument joins a growing collection of statues installed across Florida through the America250FL initiative.

Last year, Governor DeSantis announced plans to place statues honoring several of America’s Founding Fathers in Florida counties that bear their names. Those plans include monuments recognizing Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and James Madison.

Florida has also unveiled statues celebrating other notable Americans in recent years. These include a monument honoring President Ronald Reagan at Florida International University, a statue of Frederick Douglass in St. Augustine, and a tribute to President Calvin Coolidge at Bok Tower Gardens.

State officials say these monuments are intended to help preserve American history while giving future generations places to learn about the leaders who influenced the nation’s development. With the country’s 250th birthday approaching, Florida continues expanding its series of historical monuments as part of its year-long commemoration, using permanent landmarks like the new Abraham Lincoln statue in The Villages to recognize the people whose leadership helped shape the United States.
