Bank of America, the second-largest bank in the U.S. with $2.45 trillion in total assets, only behind Chase Bank with $3.38 trillion in total assets, is about to close dozens of branches in the coming weeks in several states, including Florida, California, and Texas. Currently, Bank of America has a total of 3,900 branches nationwide and 15,000 ATMs, according to Market Watch’s most recent data.
The reports about branch closures come after Bank of America already closed down more than a hundred branches last year, a trend that is about to continue this year too. While some of the employees from the affected branches will be laid off, the bank’s management is confident that in no way these closures will have a negative impact on clients who live in the affected areas.
What we know so far
Bank of America has already scheduled the closure of dozens of branches for this year, a list that can be updated anytime. The Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC), which mandates that banks report all closures to the federal agency, provided this information, which is public. This specific step also requires entities to provide details about each branch, including state, city, address, and closure date.
Bank of America is adjusting operations
The Bank of America is changing how it operates because fewer people are going into banks these days. This has resulted in some branches shutting down while new ones open in different places. The goal is to cut down on the branches that don’t get many visitors. However, this could mean that customers might have to go further to find their closest branch. In the last ten years, it’s become harder for customers, especially those in rural areas, to get to their nearest branch because they’re farther away.
Bank of America has informed the OCC that they plan to close a total of nine branches across the country in February and 25 additional branches in March. These branches are located in various locations in several states nationwide.
