Miami, Florida – In a historic move for Miami, Mayor Francis X. Suarez has signed a contract with the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust targeted at solving the pressing problem of homelessness among the elderly population of the city. This partnership heralds the transformation of the former La Quinta Inn into a permanent residential facility for seniors without homes.

The City of Miami is funding $8 million to transform the La Quinta Inn, located at 10821 Caribbean Blvd., Cutler Bay, into a safe and supportive space for the elderly, a demographic especially at risk within the homeless population. The La Quinta Inn, which lately ceased operations as a hotel, was converted strategically in response to the growing need for long-term housing alternatives in a city where shelters are always running at maximum capacity.

Given the growing rates of homelessness in metropolitan centers nationwide, this project becomes particularly important. Miami’s approach focuses on giving sustainable living choices with more than just a simple shelter. At the signing event, Mayor Suarez underlined the two main goals of the project: to provide quick relief and to respect the dignity of people it intends to assist.

“I’m honored to sign this agreement today, reaffirming our commitment to a stronger, more compassionate Miami,” said Mayor Francis X. Suarez. “This partnership with the Homeless Trust is a vital part of our strategy to address homelessness in our City. Transforming the La Quinta Inn into permanent housing for unsheltered seniors is not just about providing a roof over their heads—it’s about restoring their dignity and ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.”

The funding will support major improvements to transform the facility into a safe, friendly place for its next occupants. It will include specialist assistance catered to the particular requirements of seniors who have gone through protracted homelessness. This project’s main objective is to reach what municipal officials refer to as “functional zero” homelessness, therefore guaranteeing that any person in need may have a safe and stable place to live.

Community leaders and supporters of the homeless, who see the relocation as a vital first step in addressing a recurring and complicated problem, have overwhelmingly supported it. Miami is addressing one of the most difficult aspects of urban homelessness by concentrating on the needs of unsheltered elders, therefore acting with targeted effect.
