Miami Dade College and University of Miami team up for new Project Manager Apprenticeship Program

Share

Miami, Florida – Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with the University of Miami (UM) and supported by CareerSource South Florida, has initiated a pioneering Project Manager Apprenticeship Program. This program marks a significant advancement in vocational education, particularly in the construction industry, blending academic learning with practical, on-the-job experience.

The program is designed to cater to individuals with little to no experience in construction, offering a unique combination of classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training. This apprenticeship, in partnership with Related Urban Construction, LLC, promises full-time employment, competitive wages, free tuition, and employer-provided benefits, thereby offering a holistic educational and professional experience.

Enrolled students will complete coursework facilitated by UM’s College of Engineering, under the sponsorship of MDC. This collaboration not only strengthens the existing partnership between MDC and UM but also extends it to include the Building Automation Technician Apprenticeship Program. This expansion involves employer partners such as Johnson Controls, Inc., Albireo Energy, LLC, and Siemens Industry, Inc.

Pratim Biswas, Dean of the College of Engineering at UM, highlighted the significance of this program amidst South Florida’s development boom. “We are proud to partner with Miami Dade College and private sector companies, like Related Urban Construction, to train apprentices with the skills they need to thrive in the construction industry, make full use of new innovative digital technologies and leave their mark on our community,” he stated.

MDC stands out as the first academic institution in Florida to be designated as a Program Sponsor by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) and named Apprenticeship Ambassador by the US Department of Labor. With 21 occupations, MDC boasts the highest number of Registered Apprenticeship Programs of any educational institution in the state. This role allows MDC to register occupations, employers, and apprentices for participation in Registered Apprenticeship and Pre-apprenticeship Programs.

These programs are essential for employers to develop training programs that meet industry standards, enhancing productivity and workforce quality. Completing a registered apprenticeship program gives apprentices industry recognition as masters in their field.

This initiative represents a significant step towards integrating academic knowledge with practical skills, addressing the growing needs of the construction industry, and providing valuable career opportunities for aspiring professionals in South Florida.
