Rick Wilson, a former Republican strategist and outspoken critic of Trump, has expressed significant doubts about any candidate’s ability to challenge Trump’s overwhelming influence within the party. True to Wilson’s predictions, Trump has emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee.
The Strategic Consolidation of Power
Trump’s control extends deep into the Republican National Committee (RNC) and state GOPs across the United States, marking a strategic consolidation that has significantly impacted the primary processes. Richard Luscombe from The Guardian highlights this influence through Trump’s installation of loyalists, including his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who now serves as co-chair of the RNC.
Dan Judy, a senior analyst at North Star Opinion Research, shared insights into the meticulous planning behind Trump’s takeover of state parties. “The big, sort of under-the-radar story in American politics over the last couple of years was the way Trump and his people had taken over state parties across the country,” Judy explained. Despite the early buzz around potential contenders like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Judy was always skeptical, recognizing the deep-rooted control Trump maintained over the state mechanisms.

Judy elaborates that state GOPs have been systematically tailored to favor Trump, with many changing their rules to adopt winner-takes-all primaries. This structural adjustment significantly advantaged Trump, especially in head-to-head matchups against candidates like Nikki Haley. “It was clear that she was going to have to win some of these things outright to get any delegates at all, and she couldn’t do it,” Judy remarked, pointing to the insurmountable challenges faced by Trump’s opponents due to the rigged party frameworks.
The Fall of DeSantis and Trump’s Unchallenged Ascendancy
Governor Ron DeSantis’ campaign serves as a poignant example of Trump’s influence. Despite a landslide reelection as governor, DeSantis struggled to gain traction in the presidential race against Trump. His eventual withdrawal from the race and endorsement of Trump underscored the futility of opposing Trump within the current GOP structure.
“As high as (DeSantis) was riding after his huge reelection victory,” Judy noted, “any hope that he would have had of continuing to be top dog in the Florida GOP went out the window when he failed to get any traction at all in the presidential race.” Judy pointed out that DeSantis’ lack of relational politics and grassroots organization was a significant disadvantage compared to Trump’s established network and party control.
Looking ahead, Judy suggested that DeSantis’ political future within the GOP hinges on his alignment with Trump. “If Donald Trump is reelected, there might be a place in the administration for (DeSantis). If he wants to have a future in the current Republican Party, he cannot be an enemy of Donald Trump. And you’re seeing him do the things that he needs to do to remain in good standing,” Judy concluded.
