Residents urged to conserve water as summer heat peaks across Broward County

Broward County, Florida – Broward County is asking people to pay more attention to how they use water outside as the summer heat is reaching its seasonal peak. It’s a great time for homeowners to make big improvements to their irrigation systems and save money at the same time, as the hottest season is now in full force.
Broward County is working with 12 local water companies to give residents big refunds if they switch to EPA WaterSense-labeled irrigation technology. These changes not only save water but also minimize your monthly utility expenditures. The Residential Irrigation Rebate Program (RIRP) gives qualified families up to $600 to install computerized, weather-based irrigation systems.
The rebate program includes four distinct upgrade options:
- “In the Zones” – This option addresses mixed irrigation zones that combine spray heads and rotor heads, which often leads to uneven watering. Homeowners can receive up to $300 for replacing older components with multi-stream nozzles and pressure-regulating sprinkler (PRS) bodies. Using PRS bodies is required.
- “Get Smart” – Designed for households with older mechanical timers, this rebate (up to $500) helps transition irrigation systems into the digital age. It covers new solenoid valves and smart controllers that adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions.
- “VIP Upgrade” – For those already using digital irrigation systems with solenoid valves, this option provides up to $200 to upgrade to an EPA WaterSense-labeled smart controller that further improves water efficiency.
- “Mix and Match” – Combining the benefits of the previous options, this comprehensive package offers up to $600 for homeowners who correct mixed head zones while also installing a weather-based smart controller.
To be eligible, applicants must have a working irrigation system, live in an area served by a partner water supplier, and use city water that is metered (not water from a well, lake, or canal). Homeowners who are interested can apply online and Broward’s NatureScape Irrigation Service (NIS) will get in touch with them to set up a free evaluation at their house.
This initial visit includes a complete irrigation system checkup, a water conservation toolkit, and guidance on sustainable landscaping. The system needs to get at least 70% on a fitness test to move further.
After the evaluation, participants will get a full report and have ten days to decide whether or not they want to go ahead with the suggested upgrades. The NIS team will evaluate the installation before sending the refund cheque, and all repairs must be done by a licensed vendor within 60 days.
Residents should apply right away because each water provider only has a limited quantity of refunds available. Individuals who apply may be put on a waiting list if there isn’t enough money.
Residents may save water and help make their town more sustainable by acting immediately. They will also have the added benefit of a decreased water bill.
APPLY HERE and answer all questions to the best of your knowledge. Once your eligible application is received and reviewed, NIS staff will contact you to schedule the initial system evaluation.
