“I get a high from living dangerously”: Florida man with sick child abuse past gets caught with nightmare collection, goes to prison

Florida – A Florida man with a prior federal conviction involving child se*ual abuse materials has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after again receiving illegal images and videos over the internet, according to court records. The sentence also includes 15 years of supervised release and an order to pay $45,000 in restitution to child victims.

Senior United States District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan imposed the sentence on Alexander James Koby, 40, following his guilty plea on August 15, 2025. Koby has been in federal custody since September 2024, when he was transferred from state prison. At the time, he was serving a state sentence for failing to register as a se* offender.

The case, according to the Department of Justice, reflects a repeated pattern of criminal behavior. In 2014, Koby was convicted in federal court of possessing child se*ual abuse materials. After completing his federal prison sentence, he was released in August 2019 and began a 25-year term of supervised release while living in Jacksonville. As part of that supervision, he was prohibited from possessing internet-capable devices without authorization.

That supervision was violated in December 2022. On December 7, law enforcement officers conducted a search of Koby’s residence, where they found a computer, a cellphone, and an external hard drive. The devices were seized because they were not permitted under the terms of his release.

During an interview with investigators, Koby admitted that he had used a specific internet browser to search for photos and videos depicting the se*ual abuse of children. He also admitted that he ma**urbated while viewing the material. When asked why he continued this behavior despite his prior conviction and supervision, he said he got a thrill from “living dangerously,” according to court documents.

A forensic examination of the seized devices revealed a significant volume of illegal material. Investigators found a total of 103 videos and 2,311 images depicting the sadistic se*ual abuse of young children. The examination showed that Koby downloaded the materials over the internet between March 11 and December 7, 2022.

Federal authorities emphasized the real-world harm caused by such offenses. Homeland Security Investigations officials noted that the images and videos represent documented abuse of real children, and that each download or viewing contributes to ongoing harm for the victims.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations, with support from task force partners. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown.

The prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006. The program focuses on identifying, investigating, and prosecuting individuals involved in the se*ual exploitation and abuse of children, while also providing support and resources for victims.
