“She’s my cousin… wait, just a friend!”: Florida traffic stop turns into nightmare rescue of missing 16-year-old North Carolina girl
Florida – What began as a routine traffic stop on a quiet stretch of highway in northeast Florida quickly unfolded into something far more serious when a deputy discovered that the passenger in the vehicle had been missing for weeks, authorities say.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the encounter happened on Sunday, March 8, when a deputy pulled over a vehicle traveling at a high speed along U.S. 17 South. The stop itself appeared ordinary at first. But within minutes, the situation began to unravel in ways no one expected.
The driver identified himself as 37-year-old Joshua Magraff of North Carolina. Sitting beside him was a teenage girl. When the deputy asked about the passenger, Magraff told the officer she was his “little cousin” and said she was 16 years old.
The deputy then turned his attention to the girl and asked for identification. Her responses, authorities said, raised immediate concern.
Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows the teen hesitating when asked her name. At one point she responded “Huh?” multiple times before giving a name, Brandy Lewis. She also claimed to have been born in 2013, a statement that would have made her just 12 years old.
According to investigators, the inconsistencies didn’t stop there.
The girl provided additional names and birthdates, each one conflicting with the last. The shifting answers left the deputy increasingly uneasy about her identity and well-being.
Concerned, the deputy asked the girl to step out of the vehicle and sit in the patrol car. Away from the driver, she eventually told the deputy her real name.
A database search soon revealed a troubling detail. The teenager had been reported missing nearly a month earlier in North Carolina.
Authorities contacted the girl’s mother, who confirmed she had filed a missing person report on Feb. 16. She also told investigators she did not know Magraff.
With that information in hand, deputies turned back to the driver and began questioning him about his relationship with the teen. According to the sheriff’s office, Magraff’s explanation shifted during the conversation.
He first claimed the girl was his cousin, but later said she was simply a “friend.”
When the deputy pointed out the large age difference, the fact that Magraff being 37 and the girl 16, the driver reportedly offered another explanation, saying he believed she was actually 19 years old.
Authorities say Magraff also told deputies the pair had traveled to Florida “to play gambling games.”
During a search of the vehicle, investigators say they discovered items that added further complications to the case. Deputies reported finding 19 counterfeit $100 bills along with synthetic marijuana, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Following the discovery, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office contacted Florida’s Department of Children and Families to ensure the teen would be placed in protective care until she could safely reunite with her mother.
Magraff was taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Jail.
According to authorities, he now faces several charges, including interference with child custody, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of counterfeit currency and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jail records show he was held on a $9,000 bond.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case and the events that led the missing teen to Florida.
It was, in the end, a reminder of how an ordinary moment, a deputy noticing a speeding car on a highway, can unexpectedly open the door to a far deeper story, one that ultimately helped bring a missing child back into the view of authorities after weeks of uncertainty.
