Fort Lauderdale bridge repair project set to bring months of lane shifts and sidewalk detours, work begins April 13

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Drivers and pedestrians who use South Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale should expect a long stretch of construction activity as Broward County moves ahead with a major bridge repair project designed to improve both safety and the condition of the roadway.

According to the county, work is set to begin Monday, April 13, along South Andrews Avenue between Davie Boulevard and Southwest 11th Street.

The project will include replacement of the concrete bridge barrier walls, reconstruction of the sidewalk, and milling and resurfacing of the roadway. The effort is being funded through gas tax dollars and, unless weather or other unexpected conditions interfere, is expected to continue through August 2026.

The first phase will focus on the east side of the bridge, which carries northbound traffic. During that stage, the outermost lane and the nearby sidewalk will be closed while crews complete repairs.

Even with the work underway, two travel lanes will remain open through a traffic shift intended to keep vehicles moving. Pedestrians, however, will be rerouted around the active construction zone.

Once work on the east side is finished, the operation will move across to the west side of the bridge, where southbound traffic runs.

The same pattern will follow there, with the outer lane closed, pedestrian detours in place, and traffic adjusted so that two lanes stay open. County officials also said nighttime closures will be necessary when crews begin milling and resurfacing operations.

The bridge work touches two commission districts. The southbound lanes fall within District 8, represented by Vice Mayor Robert McKinzie, while the northbound side is in District 4, represented by Commissioner Lamar Fisher.

County officials described the construction as necessary upkeep for a heavily used corridor and urged the public to plan ahead, stay alert near the work zone, and expect changes as the project progresses from one side of the bridge to the other over the coming months.
