Business and conservation experts join South Florida Water Management District board

Tallahassee, Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis this week appointed two new members and reappointed one to the South Florida Water Management District in an effort to improve management of water resources in South Florida. Requiring Florida Senate approval, the appointees seek to enhance the leadership of the district negotiating difficult water management issues.
Newly appointed to the board, Thomas Hurley has an extensive amount of financial and business expertise. Hurley, now Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Becker Holding Corporation, has a background in psychology and business administration that could provide a different viewpoint on the psychological and economic sides of water management. His participation in several community groups, including the Young Presidents Organization and the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County, highlights his dedication to public service.
Joining Hurley is Robert Spottswood Jr., who takes on his new position with a wealth of knowledge in business and environmental responsibility. His professional background as President of Spottswood Companies, Inc. and a partner at Spottswood & Sterling, PPLC is augmented by active participation in conservation and wildlife management. Spottswood’s involvement in the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and boards like the Nature Conservancy and the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida underline his strong dedication to natural resource conservation.
The governor also reappointed Charlette Roman, who has a long history in military and public service and remains on the board. Roman, a retired Battle Command Training Specialist for Northrop-Grumman Tech Services and a veteran of the United States Army, previously served as a councilor for the City of Marco Island, where she was known for her leadership and fiscal oversight. Her comprehensive educational background in communications and commercial management as well as her strategic insights from the U.S. Army War College make her a great complement to the water management team.
As the South Florida Water Management District deals with continuous problems like water conservation, ecosystem restoration, and flood protection, these appointments arrive at an important time. The different backgrounds of the appointees mirror Governor DeSantis’ approach to include a wide spectrum of skills and viewpoints into the administration of the state’s water resources, so guaranteeing that environmental preservation and economic growth go hand in hand.
