Doral, Florida – Miami-Dade County Animal Services has announced a temporary suspension of public animal intake from Saturday, June 22nd, until Wednesday, July 10th, citing the need to protect the health and safety of the pets currently housed at their facilities.
Overcapacity Challenges and Community Call to Action
Annette Jose, the Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services, expressed regret over the decision, emphasizing its necessity due to the shelter’s current state. “We deeply regret having to take this step, but it is necessary to ensure the safety and health of the pets currently in our shelter,” said Jose. She highlighted that despite the commendable efforts of staff and volunteers, the shelter has reached a critical overcapacity that severely strains resources.
In response to the closure, the department is urging the community to consider adopting a pet. Increasing pet adoptions will not only provide these animals with a much-needed home but will also help to alleviate the operational pressures on the shelter.

Nationwide Overcrowding Crisis
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, animal shelters across the country have been grappling with an overcrowding crisis, and Miami-Dade Animal Services is no exception. In recent years, the shelter has seen an increase in the length of stay for animals, leading to several temporary closures in 2023 due to similar capacity issues. The upcoming closure marks the first such instance in 2024, intended to curb the overcrowding and reduce the spread of infectious diseases among the shelter population.
Focus During Closure
The decision to temporarily halt animal intake was made after thorough consultations with animal welfare experts, aiming to prioritize the well-being of the animals currently under the department’s care. During this period, Miami-Dade Animal Services will concentrate on finding suitable homes for these animals. This effort will be supported through partnerships with rescue organizations, foster programs, and community adoption events. Despite the intake suspension, essential services such as emergency response and animal control operations will remain active, and the Adoption Mall will continue to welcome potential pet adopters.
Community Support and Ongoing Efforts
The shelter is appreciative of the ongoing support from the community, volunteers, and donors, which has been crucial during this challenging time. Miami-Dade Animal Services is committed to addressing the underlying causes of animal overpopulation and is actively exploring long-term solutions to prevent future crises.
Residents looking to assist during the closure can contribute through donations of supplies, participation in fostering programs, or volunteering at the shelter. These contributions are vital for maintaining the shelter’s operations and ensuring the animals’ well-being during this transition period.
