Jacksonville, Florida – United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg has announced the indictment of Eric Evan Brown, 57, from White Springs, Florida, on multiple federal charges. These charges include the interstate transmission of a threat to injure, threatening a United States Secret Service Protectee, two counts of forcibly assaulting a federal officer without the use of a deadly weapon, and two counts of threatening a federal official.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
If convicted of these charges, Brown faces severe penalties. Specifically, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison for each count of threatening a federal official. Additionally, the charges for forcibly assaulting a federal officer could lead to up to 8 years in prison for each count, while the transmission of a threat and the threat against a U.S. Secret Service Protectee could result in up to 5 years in prison per count. Following his court appearance on May 20, 2024, Brown was ordered detained, pending trial.

The events leading to these charges began on April 7, 2024, when Brown allegedly posted a threatening message on the social media network X, formerly known as Twitter, aiming to kill the spouse of a former president of the United States. This post triggered a follow-up investigation by the U.S. Secret Service. On May 9, 2024, while two Secret Service agents were conducting this investigation, Brown reportedly threatened to assault and murder both agents.
This case is being handled by the U.S. Secret Service – Jacksonville Field Office, with support from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein is leading the prosecution.
