Florida Sen. Rick Scott slams Trump’s $5 trillion debt bomb: “Get the spending under control”

Florida – Florida Senator Rick Scott is making it clear that he agrees with Elon Musk about concerns over a big legislative package that Donald Trump heavily supports. Scott recently said on Newsmax that he strongly opposes the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill.” This is similar to what Musk said about how the plan will increase the federal deficit and raise the debt ceiling by trillions.
Scott, who has traditionally been a supporter of balanced budgets, highlighted the importance of being responsible with government spending.
“He’s been clear. He’s in the same camp that I am that we’ve got to get a balanced budget,” U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said on Newsmax. “And so I agree with him that we’ve got to figure out how to get the spending under control.”
The legislation in question, widely known as Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” has sparked controversy for its size and scope. Musk, a billionaire businessman who often talks about national policy, didn’t hold back when he talked about the proposal on his X (previously Twitter) account.
He said it might put the country $5 trillion more in debt. Elon Musk recently urged his supporters to reach out to their Senators and representatives in the Congress because he believes that the proposal might make America go bankrupt.

Scott reinforced these concerns, drawing a parallel between federal budgeting and household finances.
“The federal taxpayers told us how much money they’re going to give us. They’re going to give us about $5.5 trillion. So what we’ve got to do is say, ‘OK, that’s what the federal taxpayer is going to give us. That’s how much we have to spend. There’s going to be a lot of ‘nice to haves’ that maybe you can’t spend,’” Scott said.
He said that Congress should say no to some things they can’t afford, just like families have to do.
Scott’s main point of complaint is that the package that the House passed does not provide a realistic way to balance the budget. The bill’s future is still up in the air because the Senate plans to make significant modifications. Scott thinks that the reforms will fix what he and other fiscal conservatives see as too high levels of government spending.
At the same time, Musk’s growing willingness to speak out on the issue, especially since he used to support Trump and was involved in suggestions for the Department of Government Efficiency, has given politicians like Scott new life. Fiscal hawks see a chance to get people on their side and call for more discipline in how Washington handles its budget.
Scott and Musk are on the same side of the issue, fighting against a legislative drive that they say threatens the long-term financial sustainability of the country. The fate of Trump’s signature bill is in the balance as pressure grows from both Capitol Hill and Silicon Valley.
